At the Chinese New Year light-up in Chinatown, at the stroke of midnight on the first day of the Lunar New Year, firecrackers are set off under controlled conditions by the Singapore Tourism Board. Other occasions where firecrackers are allowed to be set off are determined by the tourism board or other government organizations. However, they are not allowed to be commercially sold. It's believed that setting off firecrackers during the Lunar New Year,
will ward evil spirits away with it's loud cracking noises.

Happily these firecrackers are for decorations only! If real they could cause some damage...Fireworks are not legal in Connecticut - but people fire away around the July 4th here. People seem to enjoy celebrating with fireworks here, too. Happy New Year!
Happy Chinese New Year, Elaine!

Beautiful photo. We get firecrackers going off half the night for the Jewish holiday of Purim, the noise is supposed to block out the name of the villian in the story of the holiday.
