Ah Meng (18 June 1960 - 8 February 2008)
Ah Meng was a female Sumatran Orangutan and a tourism icon of Singapore. She was smuggled from Indonesia and kept illegally as a domestic pet before being recovered by a veterinarian in 1971. She was then eleven years old and was given a home at the Singapore Zoo.
Ah Meng was the poster girl of the Singapore Zoo. Pictures of her have been used in Singapore's tourism advertisements worldwide. She has also been featured in over 30 travel films and more than 300 articles. Some of the foreign dignitaries and celebrities that visited Ah Meng included Prince Philip and Michael Jackson.

This vegetarian restaurant with red shutters caught my attention.

Firecrackers
Decorations of Firecrackers
At the Chinese New Year light-up in Chinatown, at the stroke of midnight on the first day of the Lunar New Year, firecrackers are set off under controlled conditions by the Singapore Tourism Board. Other occasions where firecrackers are allowed to be set off are determined by the tourism board or other government organizations. However, they are not allowed to be commercially sold.
It's believed that setting off firecrackers during the Lunar New Year,
will ward evil spirits away with it's loud cracking noises.

A trip to an offshore island - Pulau Ubin, north-east of Singapore.

Pulau Ubin,Singapore

Bringing my city kids to the rural island was quite an experience with them.
With hardly no tall-rise buildings and automobiles.
They experienced what it was to be living in the "Kampong" (Kampong meaning village in Malay) for just a day.
We cycled around the island on our rented bicycles, which explains why my entire body is aching currently!

The kids and their father had some fun near the water catching shrimps with a pathetic plastic bottle.
Etymology

The name Pulau Ubin literally means "Granite Island" in Malay, which explains the many abandoned granite quarries there. The word ubin is said to be a Javanese term for "squared stone". To the Malays, the island is also known as Pulau Batu Ubin, or "Granite Stone Island". The rocks on the island were used to make floor tiles in the past and were called Jubin, which was then shortened to Ubin.

The island is known as chioh sua in Hokkien, which means "stone hill".

Janelle's Back Home!!!!
Thanks to all that sent her well wishes, through my blog, sms'es and phonecalls checking on Janelle's progress. She has been discharged from the hospital and is currently recuperating at home.
Janelle KKH Episode
After last week's Weekend SnapShot post on Janelle's A&E's episode.
She was admitted into KK hospital the next day with her right hip lymph node starting to hurt.
A couple of possibilities cause the swelling of her foot which caused her
3 days spent at the hospital, with bouts of high fever, a swelling foot, wheezing in the chest, blood test checking with blood cultivation if bacteria has entered her bloodstream.
Till, date we're uncertain if the swell has been due to insect bites, or cuts with bacteria entering her bloodstream.
She was treated with anti-biotics through the IV drip on her hand, leaving her movements restricted.
This hospital stay has been quite an experience for her. She's glad to be back home, away from the hospital ward. So am I!!

While there, I saw this huge article at the 'Admissions' lobby.

It was the busiest "baby factory" in the British Empire in the 1950s and 1960s. For two decades, it held the record as the world's largest maternity hospital in the Guiness Book of Records. Its peak delivery of 39,856(more than 109 per day) in 1966 was acknowledged as the "birth quake" by Guinness. It wass where more than 1.2million Singaporeans first saw the light of day. This is Kandang Kerbau Hospital(KKH), where labour pains give way to joys of birth.

Fish Works
A trip to the fish farm.
Fishes
Rows and rows of colorful fishes, greeted us at the door.
Happily Swimming
Beautiful Koi fishes, that I was attracted too.
Boxes of Fishes
Amazed by these rows of white boxes with Fighting Fishes.
Contained in Plastic
All the Fighting fishes were in plastic containers individually.

I was happy to have found this fish farm! Actually I was very happy with the prices they were selling their fishes and accessories! I was practically over-charged at the very first aquarium shop we went. Fishes are only sold at almost half the price here. Not forgetting the large variety of species to choose from.
I know I'll be back to this fish farm pretty often!! :P
